Natural Treatments for Osteoarthritis

Thousands of people suffer from joint pain from osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease. The conventional treatment for arthritis pain often includes over-the-counter drugs such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) such as Aspirin. However, these drugs, when taken regularly, can have severe side effects. Acetaminophen is a toxin that can cause liver damage, and increase oxidative stress in the body. NSAIDs are known to create gastrointestinal distress, and damage the lining of the intestines, which can lead to ulcers and leaky gut syndrome. Aspirin depletes vitamin C in the body, which is important for collagen and cartilage formation.NSAIDs also interfere with glucosaminoglycans, which are molecules in the cartilage that lines joint surfaces, so they can actually lead to more damage in the degenerating joint.
There are many natural alternatives to these drugs, including anti-inflammatory herbs such as turmeric, boswellia, capsaicin (from cayenne), and ginger. Recent studies have shown that combinations of these herbs are equally effective in reducing arthritis pain when compared to pharmaceutical drugs, and they do not carry the negative side effects, but are potent anti-oxidants that provide many other health benefits. Other nutritional supplements that are beneficial for those suffering pain from osteoarthritis include omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins C and E, niacinamide and N-acetylcysteine, glucosamine, and enzymes such as papain and bromelain.
In addition to supplementation, it is very important to continue to maintain motion in joints through exercise and chiropractic care. Joint motion provides nutrition to the joint, which helps to maintain healthy tissues and prevent degeneration.             Talk to your ProActive Health team about different options for dealing with arthritis pain!
